IX.7.5 Pompeii. May 2006. Entrance to
workshop.
The felt workers or
coactiliarii produced cloth by rubbing and pressing hare pelts or “dead” wool.
The cloth was treated
with coagulants made using boiled vinegar.
Their work is depicted
in a painting at the entrance to the workshops of Verecundus, which also made
rather expensive clothing.
A graffito found there
mentions a tunica lintea aurata, (CIL
IV 9083).
This was a garment
made of linen with inserts made of spun gold.
See Panetta, M.R. (2004). Pompeii,
the history, life and art of the buried city.
