VII.12.23 Pompeii. July 2009.
Marble steps to garden area on west side of triclinium.
According to
Jashemski, large windows in three rooms had views into the garden, which was to
the left, and three steps higher than the atrium.
There were four niches
in the north wall of the garden.
A rectangular niche
and the arched niche on each side were about a metre above the ground.
A smaller arched niche
was high above the central niche.
A small round window
high in the wall furnished light to the adjacent house.
The statues in these
niches, which were painted blue inside, would have produced rather a theatrical
effect.
A blue niche can be
seen in the garden area through the triclinium window.
Jashemski lists the
statues and items found.
See Jashemski, W. F.,
1993. The Gardens of Pompeii, Volume II:
Appendices. New York: Caratzas. (p.193).
