Wilhelmina’s vineyard, excavations in 1966, 1968 and 1970.

The Jashemski excavations in 1968.

Upon their return to their excavation, they found that in the two years since 1966 the vegetation had grown over their root casts, and so their first job was to remove the weeds and clear their site.

When they had left in 1966, they had placed a large stone over each root-cast to protect them, and then covered the entire site with about 1 foot of soil. This now also needed to be removed. They worked hard and were able to clean most of the largest group of casts in the first day.

They were delighted when Prof. de Franciscis came to the excavation and told them he had the authorization to dig into the hill at the north-east corner of the vineyard at state expense. He renamed the Foro Boario “Wilhelmina’s vineyard”.
